Headway information praised again by the BMA

21 September 2011

Headway's award-winning library of information has once again been praised by the British Medical Association in its annual Patient Information Awards.

For the third successive year, Headway publications received Highly Commended status from the judges, reinforcing the high regard held by the country's leading medical organisation for the charity's information.

Headway's booklet Caring for someone with a brain injury was highly commended, as was the Headway website.

Caring for someone with a brain injury was produced for the carers and family members of people with a brain injury. It provides practical suggestions to help people to cope with the early stages, manage the long-term challenges and find the support they need.

Speaking about the booklet, the judges said: "This is an excellent booklet. It is very well presented, comprehensive in coverage and very clearly set-out. The language is appropriate and user-friendly without being patronising."

The judges continued: "It has many examples of case studies. It includes referenced quotes, a glossary, further reading, references and further addresses to contact, while the layout, colour and typeface all help to enhance the content. It's very approachable and readable and I feel sure would benefit anyone finding themselves in this situation."

The BMA judges were equally impressed with the charity's Headway website, which was entered into the competition for the first time.

They stated: "This is a nice, clean site with simple, consistent navigation and prominent promotion of the helpline contact details. It includes a very comprehensive range of online information and covers all stages of the care. Free access to downloadable factsheets and a usable search function make navigation nice and easy.

"The range of information would certainly be of great value to patients and carers, whilst the approved provider scheme and solicitors list offer reassurance that those listed have the required credentials to offer proper support and advice. This is an excellent resource for anyone affected by brain injury."

Luke Griggs, Communications Manager at Headway, said: "Once again, the high standard of information produced by our small team of dedicated, talented staff has been recognised in these prestigious awards. It's an excellent achievement and one that everybody associated with the charity should be proud of.

"Information Officer Richard Morris and Andrew Taylor, who looks after the website, deserve a great deal of credit for this continued success.

"This year's success, coupled with the booklets and factsheets that have been praised in previous years' awards, reinforces our commitment to producing written materials of the highest quality to help people improve their lives following brain injury."
