Big Lottery funding boost for Headway Leeds
01 July 2010
During Action for Brain Injury Week, around 30 Headway Leeds members gathered to meet with the Lord Mayor in Leeds city centre for a cheque presentation and celebratory meal.
The branch has been awarded a grant of £9,950 from the Big Lottery Fund, which will be used to fund a social reintegration project. The branch kick started the project with a buffet meal at a local restaurant after meeting with the Lord Mayor, which began a programme of events to include educational trips, quiz and information evenings and a day out to the coast.
As well as funding its social reintegration project, Headway Leeds will now be able to boost its library of specialist publications that provide vital information on life after brain injury, including guidance on returning to work and parenting after brain injury. It will also use the award to fund promotional and display equipment to raise awareness of brain injury locally.
Bethany Sanders Secretary of Headway Leeds said: "This is tremendous news for everyone in the Leeds area affected by brain injury. Social isolation following brain injury is quite common, both for those who sustain the injury and their carers. This project will enable us to help more people rebuild their lives after brain injury and enjoy life once again."
"Brain injury can have a devastating effect on one's life and can challenge every aspect of you: walking, talking, thinking and feeling. It can mean losing the life you once led and the person you once were. At Headway, we help people to relearn some of the basic life skills they may have lost. We are delighted that the Big Lottery Fund has chosen to help us with this work."
