Headway York new member event

04 May 2011

Headway York's popular new member eventOn Tuesday 29th March, Headway York hosted a new members evening which included talks by Dr Andrew James, Neuropsychologist at Daniel Yorath House and Sue Swales, Case Manager at Irwin Mitchell.

The Branch were enthused by the turn out, it was standing room only by the time the presentations started as there were in excess of 40 people there!

Dr James spoke about how people who have suffered a brain injury experience medical, psychological and social difficulties. Dr James highlighted how social roles often shape who a person is and explained how guidance in relation to psychological and social issues can ensure someone is effectively supported and rehabilitated.

Sue Swales gave a very useful talk about how the disability benefits system works. She explained the different categories of benefits and what members could do to ensure they are receiving the full benefits they deserve. Sue gave a run down of what benefits were compatible, and fielded a lot of questions from members in relation to their own particular situations.

The evening ended with a quick round up by Rachel McLafferty from Headway who welcomed all new members and advised them of all the support they could find through National Headway, and the local Branch.

Headway York is working hard to build on its membership and increase the activities that it provides. If you would like to be involved or find out more information about the York Branch please contact them on headwayyork@googlemail.com.
