Understanding brain injury

The Course

This is a course aimed at professionals, carers and anyone interested in the issues related to sustaining and surviving traumatic brain injury. The course covers the anatomy and physiology of the brain, what happens in brain injury and the physical, cognitive and social consequences of brain injury for the individual, families and carers. The outcomes of the course are that delegates will understand some basic facts about the damaged brain and some techniques to use when communicating with people who are living with an acquired brain injury and their families/carers.

The Trainers

Steve Shears

Has delivered a wide range of training to healthcare, counselling and social care professionals. He has facilitated courses as an independent trainer and for Relate and MindFields. His background is in counselling and psychology and he has followed post-graduate studies in the neurosciences. Steve works with other presenters from the legal, health and social care professions as well as with carers and brain injury survivors to meet the individual training needs and interests of the group attending the workshop.

Bill Hurley

After 41 years in teaching, 30 of them as a primary Headteacher, Bill retired in July 2000. Much of his time is now taken up with Health & Social Care issues and he is involved with many groups and committees that are related to the quality of services in his local area. Bill is also the Chair of Headway Rotherham and brings the brain injury perspective to the other Health and Social Care groups that he is involved with.

His traumatic introduction to the world of Health & Social Care came about when his youngest son, who was 21 at the time, sustained a serious brain injury following a moped accident in Cyprus in August 1994. His experiences in Cyprus, followed by intensive care, ward placement, rehabilitation unit and rehabilitation in the community have taught him a great deal. He likes to feel that by using his teaching skills, knowledge and experience for the benefit of others in a similar position will help to provide a better service now than existed over fourteen years ago.
