I do feel more confident carrying my card

Coping with day-to-day tasks can be challenging for brain injury survivors as they manage problems such as impaired balance, slurred speech and cognitive problems.

To help navigate these issues Headway – the brain injury association has launched a new identification card.

The Headway Brain Injury Identity Card is designed to help brain injury survivors explain their condition.

It displays the key ways in which the survivor’s brain injury affects them and includes a 24-hour criminal legal assistance number which can be called to request legal advice or representation from solicitors trained in understanding brain injury.

Nell Gregory, 46, from Glasgow, is backing the new ID card. She sustained a brain injury after suffering two haemorrhages in 2016.

The brain injury has left her with a number of problems that affect her memory, sight and balance problems. She also suffers from bouts of severe fatigue.

She said the card has provided her with a boost in confidence, especially tackling those everyday tasks that people often take for granted.

She said: “The card has helped in many ways and I have been very encouraged with the understanding people have shown once I show it.

“Bus drivers in particular have been very supportive. They lower the step for me, and wait until I'm seated before moving away.

“I do feel more confident carrying my card. It reassures me that I can prove I have a brain injury if I need to – especially if people think you're drunk, for example, when you just having balance problems.”
