Fundraising duo prepare to get on their bikes for Headway!

Sun 31 Jul 2016

July's fundraisers of the month, Joe Astbury and Ed Walker are preparing to cycle more than 160 miles from Liverpool to Chester le Street in memory of their friend and colleague, Angela Howey.

‘Angela was one of a kind. A friendly, very funny and loving person who cared deeply for her family and friends.’

Angela Howey died a few days after a brain haemorrhage on her 48th birthday in July 2015. In her memory, Joe Astbury and Ed Walker were inspired to support Headway because, ‘although Angela sadly passed away, through the kind donations of friends, family and the general public, other people who are affected by brain injury can be supported in the future.’

Their amazing fundraising efforts kicked off with a Wattbike fundraiser at Bannatyne’s Health Club in Chester le Street, where Angela was an employee. The two man team covered a distance of 80 miles in around 4 hours and spread the word of Headway with banners and collection buckets!

Joe and Ed training for their challenge

Ed and Joe are now looking forward to getting out on the road and beginning their epic journey from Liverpool, Angela’s favourite city, on Saturday 6 August. They will finish the ride in Chester le Street, where Angela lived with her husband Colin.

‘Headway have been fantastic and we have received loads of support, advice and resources to help raise money.’

Ed explained that Headway have supported their fundraising to date by providing resources including ‘a personal letter of authorisation to arrange bag packs, fundraising materials for our Wattbike fundraiser, t-shirts for promotion and general advice on fundraising.'

‘In all instances’ he said, ‘Headway have been very responsive and got back to us very quickly!’

Their tips for other aspiring fundraisers?

‘Start planning/ promoting early and make sure you work together with someone who is engaged with the fundraising so you can bounce ideas off each other. Maximise any form of social media too!’

Ed and Joe are incredibly grateful to their friends and family who ‘have been really valuable and offered support to the ride in various ways, from acting as support vehicle crew to agreeing to help us update our social media as we progress throughout the day.’

Headway is immensely grateful to the team for their incredible hard work, determination and support. Together, they have already raised over £1,500 with still a week to go until they begin their challenge!

We wish them the very best of luck!
