How does Gift Aid work?

If you're a UK taxpayer, you can make your donations worth 25% more, helping us support more families affected by brain injury. As soon as you give your permission by completing a Gift Aid declaration form, we can claim the tax back on your donation, or the sale of your donated items.

For example, a £10 donation generates an extra £2.50 for the charity, making the donation worth £12.50 in total.

Am I eligible to Gift Aid?

You are eligible for Gift Aid if you are a UK tax payer and the Income Tax and/or Capital Gains Tax you pay in that year is at least equal to the amount of Gift Aid claimed on all of your donations in that tax year.

If you pay less tax than the amount of Gift Aid claimed on all your donations in that tax year it is your responsibility to pay any difference.

How can I sign up for Gift Aid?

Complete the gift aid form online, or download a Gift Aid form and post it back to us here:

Headway – the brain injury association, The Fundraising Department, Bradbury House, 190 Bagnall Road, Old Basford, Nottingham, NG6 8SF

How to claim Gift Aid on your sponsor donations

The simplest way is to set up an online giving page using JustGiving . This site will collect Gift Aid declarations when people donate to your page so Headway UK will be able to claim Gift Aid on those donations.

If you don't want to set up an online page, you can download our sponsorship form and make sure that anyone sponsoring you who is eligible for Gift Aid, completes all the required fields and ticks the Gift Aid box. This will make sure their Gift Aid declaration is valid.

If you are a higher-rate taxpayer

You can claim back the difference between the tax you’ve paid on the donation and what the charity got back when you fill in your Self Assessment tax return. It’s the same if you live in Scotland. Do this either:

Example

You donate £100 to charity - they claim Gift Aid to make your donation £125. You pay 40% tax so you can personally claim back £25.00 (£125 x 20%).

Am I committing to give a regular donation?

No, completing a Gift Aid declaration does not commit you to any future donations, but any you may give will be covered by the declaration.

What happens if I change my name or move house?

Please let us know if any of your circumstances change so that we can keep your record up-to-date.

How do I cancel my Gift Aid declaration?

Just get in touch and tell us that you are no longer a UK taxpayer, in writing or over the telephone, and we will stop reclaiming tax on your donations straight away.
