After months of hard work and the most comprehensive consultation exercise we have ever run, we are delighted to have launched our new five-year strategy!

At the heart of the strategy are the voices and opinions of brain injury survivors, families and carers as we look to strengthen their voices as well as the support services we provide.

Our animated video below explains more about Headway and the five-year strategy.

Headway is the UK-wide charity that works to improve life after brain injury. We are here to help people to rebuild their lives, relearn lost skills and maximise their independence while supporting families and carers to adapt to life after brain injury. To ensure we are as effective as possible, we have developed a new five-year strategy with the experiences of those directly affected by brain injury at its heart. In developing this strategy, we listened to as many voices and opinions as possible to learn more about what matters to brain injury survivors, carers and families, as well as a network of local Headway charities and volunteer-led branches. With these views in mind, we identified four strategic priorities for us to address over the next five years. Firstly, we aim to strengthen the UK-wide network of local Headway charities and volunteer-led branches that provide rehabilitation and social support services to brain injury survivors, families and carers.

We want to help this local network thrive by increasing collaboration, sharing best practice and investing in new forms of support. Secondly, we will aim to increase awareness and understanding of brain injury among the public, as well as targeting health and social care professionals from GPs to welfare benefits assessors, to increase understanding of the often hidden, fluctuating and complex effects of brain injury. Our third strategic aim will be to develop new support services to help people live well after brain injury. By diversifying the support we offer and increasing the number of people we help.

We will also use new technology to improve access to our services and information. Finally, we will support research to highlight not only the impact of brain injury, but also the value of specialist neurological rehabilitation, and we will strengthen the case for support services to be sustainably funded. We know that with the right help, at the right time, there can be life after brain injury. By working together to improve the visibility of Headway and awareness of brain injury, we can make a big difference over the next five years, and we will be relentless in pursuing our aim of improving life after brain injury.

Luke Griggs, Chief Executive of Headway - the brain injury association, said:

“This is an exciting time for Headway as we look to continue our work to modernise and evolve the charity.”

“It’s also a very challenging time for many of the independent local charities and volunteer-led branches that we support. Their needs will be prioritised in this strategy as we look to work together to find solutions to many of the challenges facing local service providers.

“We will also be aiming to increase awareness and understanding of brain injury, introducing new and more accessible forms of support, and driving research to strengthen the case for brain injury rehabilitation and support services to be sustainably funded and available to all who need them.

“Collaboration will be key to making this strategy a success and we very much look forward to working with others who share our aim of improving life after brain injury.”
