Some people with aphasia find it hard to tune into speech.

Listening to speech can be very hard in a group or when there is a lot of background noise.

Our research is helping to explain why this happens.

We are now investigating if we can use brain stimulation to help the brain hear speech better.

The effects of brain stimulation only last for a short time.

What will taking part involve?

You will do some tests. These test could include listening, hearing, understanding, speaking and reading.

Then we will do some experiments with brain stimulation.

Who can do this research?

We are looking for people with a stroke and aphasia who:
- Find it hard to follow a conversation, especially when there is lots of noise.

And

- Say some or lots of words with muddled up sounds

People cannot have brain stimulation if they:
- Have epilepsy
- Have implants in their brain
- Have severe and regular headaches

Where will the study happen?

You can do the tests at home. We will do them over the internet.

The brain stimulation is at University College London. You do not have to live in London to take part.

Expenses and Payment:

We will pay for your travel.

We will pay for a hotel if you need to stay in London.

We will give you a £30 gift voucher to say thank you.

How long is the study running?

You can take part until November 2026.

I don’t live in London, is that ok?

Yes, you can do the study if you live anywhere in Great Britain.

But remember that you need to travel to London for the brain stimulation.
