81 aSAH patients were recruited from an outpatient clinic and asked to complete questionnaires regarding cognitive strategies commonly used in the years following their injury. 95% of the participants reported having at least one cognitive complaint.
Eight subthemes were created from the 576 strategies identified: increased time and effort, increased rest before and after activity, removal of distractors, use of alternative cognitive functions, use of external aids, use of others, adjusting to reduced cognitive performance and acceptance of reduced cognitive performance.
The authors conclude that the strategies identified can help aSAH patients with finding ways to cope after injury.
