About the Trainer

Dr Sharose Hussain is a clinician and Associate Training Manager, Headway UK. He has a multidisciplinary background in medicine, neuroscience, and psychology. He has extensive experience working across inpatient and acute settings, including with individuals with neurological and neurosurgical conditions. His approach is grounded in the belief that education is power, using knowledge to support better outcomes in clinical practice

Training Description

This foundation-level session is designed for professionals who are new to working with brain injury or who would benefit from a refresher. It provides a comprehensive introduction to acquired brain injury, combining essential theory with practical insight into the lived experience of survivors and their families.

The training explores what constitutes a brain injury, how injuries occur, and the effects on cognition, behaviour, communication, and everyday functioning. It also considers the wider impact on quality of life, family relationships, and support needs. Upon completion, attendees will receive a Headway certificate recognising their participation and understanding of the session content.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the session, participants will be able to:

• Defining what a brain injury is
• Describe common mechanisms of brain injury and basic brain anatomy
• Recognise common cognitive, emotional, and behavioural difficulties following brain injury
• Understand the impact of fatigue, memory, attention, executive functioning, and communication difficulties
• Identify practical strategies to support individuals with brain injury
• Recognise the impact of brain injury on quality of life and family members
• Understand the types of support available to brain injury survivors
