Inspirational brain injury advocate Dr. Bruce Powell Joins Headway Charity Golf Day

Bruce Powell

Despite everything, the daily struggles to find a new normal, I still feel that I’m lucky, because I survived to have another go at living.

Headway Golf Day entrant

We are thrilled to announce that Dr. Bruce Powell, an admired advocate for brain injury patients and organ donation, will be joining us for the Headway Charity Golf Day in September. Bruce's remarkable journey from a distinguished medical career to his current role as an inspirational speaker and advocate makes his participation an event highlight.

A doctor’s life

Dr Bruce Powell was Australia’s longest-serving State Director of Organ and Tissue Donation, a highly experienced Anaesthetist, and Head of Department in the Intensive Care Unit at Rockingham Hospital, Western Australia, which he helped establish.  A former medical officer in the British Royal Navy, he had enjoyed a sparkling medical career and a life lived at high speed.

In 2018 Bruce took part in a charity bike ride. During the ride, he had a life-threatening accident when he hit a lamppost at 65km/hr and woke up in intensive care with a brain injury.

The accident

“On the 22nd of September 2018, I awoke to a world very different from the one I had known a week earlier.

“A catastrophic cycling accident left me with career-ending brain damage, along with a whole collection of neck, spine, facial and limb fractures. Ironically that day also handed me the privilege of time and opportunity to explore this life.”

A life reimagined after brain inury

Bruce now dedicates his life to advocating for brain injury patients and organ donation throughout Australia.

“Despite everything, the daily struggles to find a new normal, I still feel that I’m lucky because I survived to have another go at living.

“Through knowledge we each gain control of our lives, empowering us to explore and prosper.

“I now have the chance to exploit the creative part of me and exploit the professional lessons I learned in my previous life.

“Writing has presented me an opportunity to explore my personal experiences of medicine, and translate the life lessons that I have learned, across a broader community than simply health.”

We are thrilled that Bruce will be travelling back to the UK to participate in our Golf Day. Not only will he be entering a team, but he will also be speaking about his brain injury journey.
