Training Description

Goal Setting in Brain Injury Rehabilitation has been specifically designed for care professionals working in neurorehabilitation settings, support workers, case managers and social workers. Based on observations across UK services, this training addresses a common challenge: establishing clear, meaningful rehabilitation goals and supporting brain injury survivors to remain actively engaged in working towards them.

The session explores the principles of effective goal setting, moving beyond therapy-driven objectives to develop SMARTER and value-based goals that are meaningful to the individual. Participants will also learn how to report progress consistently and develop practical frameworks to help survivors monitor and reflect on their achievements.

All attendees will receive a handout prior to the session, and a resource pack containing adaptable tools, scripts, and strategies will be provided at the end of the training to support immediate implementation in practice.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the session, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the principles of SMART and SMARTER goal setting
  • Create clear, value-based goals rather than therapy-driven goals
  • Write effective SMARTER goals tailored to brain injury survivors
  • Report progress consistently through daily notes, including levels of support and prompting
  • Develop structured frameworks to support survivors in monitoring and reflecting on progress
  • Apply learning through case studies and group discussion
  • Use practical tools and scripts to embed effective goal-setting strategies in practice
