GP Training This training is designed to support GPs and practice staff to recognise how brain injury affects day-to-day interactions, improve communication, and respond effectively to behaviours that challenge.
About the Trainer
Dr Sharose Hussain is a clinician and Associate Training Manager, Headway UK. He has a multidisciplinary background in medicine, neuroscience, and psychology. He has extensive experience working across inpatient and acute settings, including with individuals with neurological and neurosurgical conditions. His approach is grounded in the belief that education is power, using knowledge to support better outcomes in clinical practice
Training Description
Brain injury survivors often face significant hidden challenges when navigating healthcare systems. Difficulties with memory, communication, processing speed, emotional regulation, and insight can make appointments, forms, waiting times, and changes to routine overwhelming. These barriers can lead to frustration, distress, and behaviours that may be misunderstood within busy GP environments.
This training is designed to support GPs and practice staff to recognise how brain injury affects day-to-day interactions, improve communication, and respond effectively to behaviours that challenge. The focus is on practical, realistic adjustments that can improve patient experience, reduce conflict, and support more effective clinical engagement
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the session, participants will be able to:
- Recognise the hidden cognitive and emotional effects of brain injury
- Understand why healthcare systems can be particularly challenging for brain injury survivors
- Identify how frustration and behaviours that challenge may arise in GP settings
- Apply practical communication strategies to support positive interactions
- Make small, reasonable adjustments to improve access and engagement in primary care
