About Gift Aid
HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) will add an extra 25p for every £1 donated at no extra cost to the donor.
This means a £10 donation becomes worth at extra £2.50 for the charity.

How does Gift Aid work?
Gift Aid is a government initiative that allows donations given to charity to be tax-effective. As soon as you give your permission by completing a Gift Aid declaration form, we can claim the tax back on your donation.
Am I eligible to Gift Aid?
You are eligible for Gift Aid if you are a UK tax payer and the Income Tax and/or Capital Gains Tax you pay in that year is at least equal to the amount of Gift Aid claimed on all of your donations in that tax year.
If you pay less tax than the amount of Gift Aid claimed on all your donations in that tax year it is your responsibility to pay any difference.
What is not eligible for Gift Aid
You cannot claim on donations:
- from limited companies
- made through Payroll Giving
- where the donor gets a ‘benefit’ over a certain limit
- of shares
- from charity cards or of vouchers, for example Charities Aid Foundation (CAF)
How to claim Gift Aid on your sponsor donations
The simplest way is to set up an online giving page using either JustGiving or Givestar. These sites will collect Gift Aid declarations when people donate to your page so Headway will be able to claim Gift Aid on those donations.
If you don't want to set up an online page, you can download our sponsorship form and make sure that anyone sponsoring you who is eligible for Gift Aid, completes all the required fields and ticks the Gift Aid box. This will make sure their Gift Aid declaration is valid.
If you are a higher-rate taxpayer
You can claim back the difference between the tax you’ve paid on the donation and what the charity got back when you fill in your Self Assessment tax return. It’s the same if you live in Scotland. Do this either:
- through your Self Assessment tax return
- by contacting HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) and asking them to amend your tax code
Example
You donate £100 to charity - they claim Gift Aid to make your donation £125. You pay 40% tax so you can personally claim back £25.00 (£125 x 20%).
Am I committing to give a regular donation?
No, completing a Gift Aid declaration does not commit you to any future donations, but any you may give will be covered by the declaration.
What happens if I change my name or move house?
Please let us know if any of your circumstances change so that we can keep your record up-to-date.
How do I cancel my Gift Aid declaration?
Just get in touch and tell us that you are no longer a UK taxpayer, in writing or over the telephone, and we will stop reclaiming tax on your donations straight away.
