Headway Birmingham and Solihull are looking for a confident, enthusiastic team player, with experience managing in retail.

About the role

Starting at £23,587.20 pa (full time 35 hours per week) pro-rata 28- hours per week £18,869.76 pa (HBS Grade 5 pay spine 1)

Working Days will be Monday, Tuesday, Friday, Saturday and alternate Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, 9am – 4:30pm – some flexibility required to meet the needs of the charity/services.

Based at our Charity Shop in Great Barr, Birmingham, however the successful candidate must be prepared to cover at our Rubery Charity Shop on pre-agreed occasions as required and attend meetings at our hubs across Birmingham.

We are looking for a confident, enthusiastic team player, with experience managing in retail.

Retail Managers work as part of our Trading Team. The Trading Teams run our charity shops across Birmingham.

The Retail Manager role is demanding and really rewarding. The focus of this role is working in conjunction with the Assistant Retail Manager to ensure that the shop is managed on a day-to-day basis. Duties to include managing stock sales, and management of Assistant Manager and Volunteers.

Duties include

  1. Take responsibility for the overall management of running the shop. Cover at our Rubery Charity Shop if required from time to time. Cover across a full week for Managers annual leave 5 weeks per year as required. Other cover as required
  2. Work with the Assistant Manager to ensure cover is always in place in the event of annual leave, illness etc.
  3. Ensure adequate Volunteer cover for all days. Seek to recruit Volunteers as required and train new Volunteers in all aspects of the work. Ensure cover staff adequately trained to cover in the event of both Retail Manager and Assistant Retail Manager absence/annual leave etc.
  4. Maintain a motivated, united, and happy team of Staff/Volunteers.
  5. Ensure all monitoring of paper and electronic documents and accounts are accurate e.g. incomes sheets, sales targets/figures. Be competent using Microsoft Office and email/online browsing/ordering etc.
  6. Ensure all policies and procedures are followed accordingly e.g. gift aid, Volunteer inductions, Health & Safety, working in-line with Headway Birmingham & Solihull operations manuals.
  7. Being aware of Trading Standards regulations, Health and Safety when selling items.
  8. Ensure the takings are correct and match the income sheet and deposited safely into the Post Office account each day.
  9. Liaise with outside companies regarding purchases, technical issues eg. till.
  10. Work to achieve and increase target sales outcomes for the shop, with the Assistant Retail Manager and Head of Operations.
  11. Ensure that information about Headway’s services is distributed with purchases and displayed effectively, with leaflets available at all times. Be proactive in promoting Headway Birmingham & Solihull services.
  12. Set up effective systems for receiving, sorting and labelling items for sale and rotate merchandise accordingly.
  13. Ensure adequate levels of stock are displayed on the shop floor, out back in preparation of display, and actively seek new stock to remain sufficient levels at all times.
  14. Aim to reduce the number of items ragged to increase profits. Be aware of profitable selling labels and brands etc. Utilise internet to assist with prices and more unusual sales.
  15. Actively promote donations from customers and local/wider community with Volunteers, to ensure regular intake of good quality of stock.
  16. Ensure the shop is clean, tidy, safe and secure at all times and that goods are displayed to maximise sales. Rotate and emphasise window displays to increase customer footfall. Re-assess shop layout regularly to maximise sales.
  17. Attend to customers politely and in a manner that encourages their return. Respond to complaints or issues in a professional manner and liaise with Head of Operations where necessary.
  18. Be alert to/respond to and report any maintenance and Health & Safety concerns/issues to the Head of Operations.
  19. Produce items for the Headway Birmingham & Solihull newsletter and Headway Birmingham & Solihull social media sites.
  20. Liaise regularly with the Head of Operations regarding holidays, absence, sickness, updates etc.
  21. Assist with publicity, special events and other occasions arranged by Headway Birmingham & Solihull.
  22. Undertake mandatory and any job-related training in accordance to Headway Birmingham & Solihull terms and conditions.
  23. Be part of the overall Headway Birmingham & Solihull staff team, working flexibly, contributing to other activities where required, and at all times upholding the company’s good name and policies.
  24. To attend meetings at our Rubery Office (B45 9SN), or any other Headway Birmingham & Solihull premises as required which are based in Moseley, Rubery and Sutton Coldfield.
  25. Undertaking other tasks as may be agreed with the Head of Operations/Chief Executive Officer from time to time.
