Over the weekend celebrity chef Gordon Ramsey posted an emotional message on Instagram about the importance of cycle safety with this clear piece of advice:
“You’ve got to wear a helmet.”
In the video, Gordon, a passionate cyclist, shared the news that he was recently involved in a serious accident whilst cycling in the US and that wearing a helmet had saved his life.
He lifted his top to show significant bruising to his left-hand side and said “I had a really bad accident and it really shook me and honestly I’m lucky to be here.”
The star has a significant following on Instagram and used his experience to advocate for the importance of wearing a helmet when cycling – whatever your age, and however long or short the journey.
“Please, please, please wear a helmet. If I didn't, honestly, I wouldn't be here now."
We are pleased that Gordon Ramsey is safe and well, and recovering from his ordeal. We are grateful to him for using his experience to make a positive impact and raise awareness of the importance of wearing a helmet to protect your head.

Cycle safety
At Headway, we are passionate about promoting safe cycling, while supporting calls to make it safer for people of all ages to take to their bikes and get pedalling.
Cycle helmets save lives and can prevent people sustaining lifelong brain injuries. This fact has been proven by numerous peer-reviewed, published scientific studies and is shared by well-respected professional bodies including the British Medical Association, the Association of Paediatric Emergency Medicine, the Bicycle Helmet Initiative Trust and numerous doctors and neurosurgeons across the UK. You can read more about the research, and key cycle helmet facts on our Cycle safety campaign page.
