Each year, Headway holds a glittering awards ceremony, celebrating the achievements and contributions of people with brain injuries and those who support them. This year, the event was held at the JW Marriott Grosvenor House in Mayfair.
Stephen Davies, 58, who has a brain injury himself, has been volunteering with Headway South Manchester and Stockport for four decades, starting just after the charity's inception in 1983.
He quickly started taking on the role of volunteer and member representative within the Board of Trustees and has been a ‘major force’ at the group ever since.
Stephen has now received the Volunteer of the Year Award - sponsored by Anthony Gold Solicitors. It was presented by Headway Chief Executive Luke Griggs and Jackie Spinks, Partner at Anthony Gold.
When asked how it feels to win, Stephen said: "I'm so pleased. I didn't expect to win, up against other amazing finalists. I am so chuffed and it was a wonderful day."
Stephen’s brain injury, caused by a fall and a resulting blood clot, meant he could no longer work. Following his injury, Stephen was unconscious for three and a half weeks, after which he had extensive speech and motor issues, which affect the way the brain and the body work together to move and complete specific tasks such as walking.
Stephen soon started to devote his time to Headway and the empowerment of its members, as well as supporting the charity with fundraising activities to ensure sustainability for the future.
Headway South Manchester and Stockport, who recently celebrated their 40th birthday – with Stephen a major part - supports brain injury survivors and their families and carers.
Stephen was nominated for the prestigious Volunteer of the Year award by Headway South Manchester and Stockport Communications Manager, Kat Whitemoss.
Kat said: “Stephen is the absolute backbone of Headway South Manchester and Stockport. He is involved in all aspects of the charity and supports everyone who walks through the door in need of kindness and care.”
Luke Griggs, Chief Executive of Headway – the brain injury association, said:
“For 40 years, Stephen has given his time and compassion to the people of Headway South Manchester and Stockport.”
“Stephen’s impact on the lives of brain injury survivors and their families over this time is immeasurable. He is a shining example of what it means to be a volunteer.”Back
