Researchers have found that just over a third (36.5%) of 12 – 24-year-old athletes who sustained a sport-related concussion (SRC) demonstrated long-term psychological symptoms, namely anger, anxiety, depression and stress.
The researchers also found that orthopaedic injuries and delayed return-to-play were significant predictors of psychological symptoms after SRC.
The research highlights the importance of recognising that concussed sports players can develop psychological problems after injury, especially when they have orthopaedic injuries and a delayed return-to-play.
