A team of researchers have conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to compare the risk of epilepsy between individuals with traumatic brain injury (TBI) and those without TBI.
Observing results from 10 studies, the researchers found that individuals with TBI had a 4.25 times higher risk of having epilepsy than individuals without TBI. They also found that patients within 5 years post-TBI had the highest risk of epilepsy.
The researchers conclude that long-term follow up of individuals with TBI is necessary to prevent adverse consequences due to the significantly higher risk of developing epilepsy.
