New drug for stroke recommended by NICE

A new drug for treating ischemic stroke in adults has been recommended by NICE.

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) has approved a new drug for the treatment of ischemic strokes, called tenecteplase.

Ischemic strokes are a type of stroke in which the development of a blood clot causes blockage of normal blood flow to the brain. This deprives the brain of much needed oxygen, which can cause brain cell damage or death.

Tenecteplase works by activating an enzyme in the body that breaks down blood clots, to restore normal blood flow to the brain. It is given in the early phase of stroke.

The new drug has been suggested to have the potential to save the NHS millions of pounds.
