Headway's partnership with the Great North Swim

We’re thrilled to announce that we’re partnering with Great North Swim to open a quiet half-mile wave on Sunday, 15th June at 2pm.

As we know, brain injury survivors can experience a huge range of debilitating symptoms; attending bright, noisy, crowded events is often not possible as they can exacerbate these symptoms, contributing to feelings of isolation and exclusion. Being able to participate in the Quiet Wave changes that it will enable survivors to enjoy all the event has to offer, free from additional stress and anxiety.

What is a quiet wave?

Dive into tranquillity with our Quiet Wave! This special wave is perfect for all swimmers who prefer a peaceful environment. Enjoy low-level music, a gentle PA system, and a reduced capacity, ensuring you have plenty of space to swim and relax.

A half-mile swim is a great introduction to outdoor swimming! It's equivalent to around 32 lengths of a 25-metre swimming pool, making it a great way to start your open-water adventure.

Do I need a wetsuit?

Wetsuit use is optional for water temperatures of 15c or above.  See the Great Swim wetsuit policy for all the details.

Can I hire a wetsuit?

Absolutely! Click this link to find wetsuit hiring options from Zone3.

Do I need any other swimming equipment?

We've got you covered with a hat! You will need a wetsuit and goggles. If it's chilly, you may want to consider water gloves and socks, but they are not essential.

How do I train?

Training is easy! You can practice in your local swimming pool to get ready for the big day.

Do I have to have done open-water swimming before?

Not at all! This is for all abilities.  Just make sure you're comfortable with the distance before event day.

Where will I change on the day?

You'll have access to heated changing marquees, so you can stay warm and comfortable before and after your swim.

A message from the Great North Swim team

“There will be the ‘normal level of support’ which will effectively doubled due to the nature of the wave. This consists of safety kayakers monitoring the swimmers as they progress round, who will be happy to talk to and reassure swimmers, and equally act as a rest station should a swimmer become agitated or need a moment to gather themselves.
"We can also offer a purple hat for those with additional needs, who can be monitored more closely. Given the nature of the wave, we would ask people only to request a purple hat if they need one, given additional focus will be given to all swimmers in that wave anyway”
