The Carer of the Year Award, sponsored by Hugh James Solicitors, celebrates the incredible dedication and devotion of those who care for people with a brain injury. Our finalists represent thousands of others across the UK who day-in, day-out demonstrate admirable determination to prove that there can be life after brain injury.

Once a year, Headway's members, friends and supporters come together to pay tribute to some very special people: brain injury survivors, carers, volunteers and campaigners whose personal achievements have earned the admiration of everyone around them. Their stories are moving and inspirational.

Three inspirational people have been nominated for the award:

Meet the finalists

WINNER: Carer of the Year finalist Sally Hylands:

Sally Hylands, 68, lives in Eastbourne with Clifford, her teenage sweetheart, whom she married in 1979.

Her nomination recognises her unwavering dedication to Clifford in the aftermath of him sustaining a life-changing brain injury which, as Sally said, “Saw their lives change overnight”.

Carer of the Year finalist Lisa Baker:

Lisa Baker, from Trowbridge, Wiltshire, is the partner of former British boxer Nick Blackwell.

Lisa has been recognised for her commitment to caring for Nick and other family members, while also helping to raise the profile of brain injury.

Carer of the Year finalist Caroline Cook:

Caroline Cook, 63, is a single mum to her son Steven, who sustained a brain injury following treatment for childhood cancer. Steven also has diagnoses of autism and epilepsy.

Nearly 20 years ago, Caroline became one of the founder members of brain injury charity Headway East Lothian and has since used her knowledge and experience to support other carers.
